Description & history
A small Hermès bandana scarf in 100% silk · black background · white border pattern · Hermès-Paris signature · hand-rolled hems · original label present · 42 × 42 cm.
Since the creation of the first Jeu des Omnibus et Dames Blanches carré in 1937, Hermès has made the silk scarf a true language of the house — each carré is made from silk twill woven in Pierre-Bénite, near Lyon, with the design photo-engraved over a period that can range from six months to two years, then screen-printed flat, screen by screen, one for each shade. Hand-rolled hems finish each piece individually, following the direction of the threads and never cut. This small format applies all the same standards on a more discreet scale: the same silk, the same finish, the same exacting standards — but in a graphic black-and-white palette that leaves behind the chromatic abundance of the large carrés in favour of a more sculptural, almost architectural reading. A restrained, easy-to-wear piece that works equally well on a white shirt tied as a loose tie, in the hair in the style of a 1960s headscarf, at the waist over high-waisted trousers, or wrapped around bag handles to instantly dress up a more neutral piece. The small 42 × 42 cm format is especially designed for these close-to-the-body uses — an everyday accessory rather than a formal carré, in the spirit of an Italian-style bandana.
