Christian Dior 100% silk carré, 88 × 88 cm, hand-rolled edges, Made in Italy. Multicoloured figurative pattern, original label present. Grade B+.

This is a carré to admire as much as to wear. The composition unfolds a mosaic of rugs seen in perspective — chevron kilims, prayer rugs with mihrabs, panels treated like blue-and-white ceramics — assembled in a tight checkerboard. On each of these rugs, a figure: a flute player in striped shalwar trousers and headdress, adorned with a necklace of red beads, standing at the centre of a scarlet medallion; languid silhouettes, a couple, a gazelle, snakes rendered as ribbons escaping from one panel to another.

The palette is bold and uncompromising: fuchsia pink, bright red, deep plum, violet, emerald green, porcelain blue. The borders alternate striped bands, crenellated friezes, black-and-white checkerboards and rows of square cabochons — a highly graphic construction that frames the whole and gives the carré clarity once folded. A detail noticed late: the Dior signature is not placed in a corner as usual, but drawn in cord and passementerie, integrated into the upper frieze.

The finish confirms the quality of the piece. All four edges are hand-rolled, a rolled border then sewn with silk thread that gives the carré its slightly rounded drape and holds when tied. It is slow work, carried out piece by piece, and this is what distinguishes a house silk carré from a simple printed scarf.

The condition is very good. No major flaws: no stains, holes or odours. A few light signs of previous use, consistent with a piece that has been worn and carefully kept, which do not affect either the colours or the feel of the silk. The original label is present. Worn around the neck, tied in the hair, as a band on a bag or as a belt over a high waist, it transforms a neutral outfit in a single gesture.
