Macadam was born in the 1970s, when Céline adapted the motif from the Triomphe crest into coated canvas — a chain inspired by the arches of the Arc de Triomphe, just steps from where the house had its boutique. Repeated endlessly on a chocolate-brown background, it creates a graphic, understated print, less showy than most monograms of its era. This restraint is what gives vintage Céline its charm today: a clear signature, recognisable to those in the know and discreet to everyone else.
This model offers a messenger-bag version reduced to the essentials. A rounded flap falls across the entire front, crossed vertically by a leather strap that fastens onto a Céline-signed gold-tone brass buckle — a detail recalling the house's equestrian heritage. The buckle itself is decorative: a concealed magnetic press stud provides the fastening, so the bag opens with one hand without having to undo anything. The elegance of harnessing without the constraint.
The smooth caramel leather of the flap, shoulder strap and piping has developed a beautiful even patina over the years, contrasting beautifully with the deep brown canvas. The shoulder strap, adjustable up to 120 cm, can be worn crossbody, leaving your hands free. Inside, there is one main compartment and a zipped pocket; on the back, an additional slip pocket, handy for a travel card or phone. It fits a phone, small wallet, keys, lipstick and AirPods. Made in Italy, serial number M07.
