Louis Vuitton was born from travel, and part of its catalogue has always stemmed from it: toiletry bags, pouches, objects that fit inside luggage rather than replace it. The Compiègne belongs to this lineage. Its shape is purely functional — a rectangular case, zipped around the edge, held by a horizontal leather band and reinforced corners that protect the areas subject to friction. Nothing is decorative: every leather element is placed where it takes the wear.
That is also what makes it interesting today. Originally designed as a toiletry bag, it has found a second life as a pouch in its own right — carried by hand, it makes an excellent secondary travel bag or daytime clutch. The 28 cm format is the most versatile: it easily holds a phone, wallet, passport, glasses case and AirPods, distributed between the main compartment, two interior patch pockets and a front patch pocket. A unisex piece, equally suited to men and women.
It comes in Monogram coated canvas, with a natural cowhide leather band, corners and piping. This leather, left untreated when it leaves the workshop, slowly darkens through contact with light and the hand: this one has developed a beautiful, even warm caramel patina, a sign of a well-worn and well-cared-for piece. The gold-tone hardware shows the light patina expected of an item of this age. Its date code SL**** dates it to 1992.
