The card holder is one of those small accessories in the Louis Vuitton catalogue which, without claiming It bag status, perfectly embody the spirit of the house: the care given to everyday objects, the same Monogram canvas and grained leather as on the larger bags, designed for lasting use. Designed in 1896 by Georges Vuitton, the founder’s son, the Monogram canvas was originally created to protect the house’s trunks against increasingly numerous counterfeits — a graphic vocabulary inspired by Japanese motifs that were then highly fashionable in Europe: the trefoil, the quatrefoil, the four-petalled flower and the interlaced LV initials. More than a century later, it continues to adorn the house’s leather goods with the same timelessness. This example, made in 1990, features clean canvas and a caramel leather interior that remains in very good condition, with only light rubbing on the edges — the discreet mark of passing time
