Description & history
The Hermès L'Atlantide carré in its pleated version · designed by Annie Faivre · released in 1995, reissued in 1999 · 100% silk · navy blue, blue, green and gold palette · approximately 125 cm long when worn.
Annie Faivre is part of that select circle of in-house artists who have left a lasting mark on the style of Hermès carrés — joining the house in the late 1970s and prolific for more than three decades, she created some of the catalogue's most recognisable designs, each bearing her discreet signature hidden in the motif, like a little frog or salamander to spot. L'Atlantide, released in 1995 and reissued in 1999, draws inspiration from the mythical island evoked by Plato — a fabulous city swallowed by the waves after challenging the Greeks, the memory of a golden age dissolved into history. Annie Faivre turns it into a deeply atmospheric composition, in a palette of ocean blues, algae greens, gold and mineral ecru — the colours of the deep sea and sunken palaces. This particular version is a pleated carré: made using exceptional craftsmanship, the carré 90 is hand-folded across its entire surface before being set, giving it this rippled texture with shifting reflections and this elongated shape of approximately 125 cm when worn. An accessory that is both more sculptural and easier to wear than the classic carré: tie it around the neck as a loose tie, belt it at the high waist, wear it as a headband, or let it drape over a bag's handles to instantly dress up a more understated piece. Delivered here with its original orange Hermès box and composition label, just as it was in the boutique.
