Heraldry is the highly codified discipline that has governed the composition of coats of arms in Europe since the Middle Ages. Every noble family, city and order has its own coat of arms, with strict rules governing colours, divisions and supporters. Hermès has regularly drawn on this vocabulary — the house has a pronounced taste for scholarly subjects that lend themselves to dense designs — and “Heraldry” is one of its most accomplished examples.
The composition is deliberately architectural. At the centre, two large crowned coats of arms face one another, framed by a Gothic arcade with cross vaults. At the four corners of the scarf are four heraldic shields, each held by its animal supporter — lions, dragons and fabulous creatures — in the strictest heraldic tradition. Fleurs-de-lis, Scottish thistles, Tudor roses, crescents and stars punctuate the whole. Every element is there for a reason; every symbol refers to a lineage or a kingdom. The scarf can be read laid flat like a page from an old armorial.
The black background gives the design its full depth, and the palette takes on a particularly dressy character. Gold and yellow dominate, enhanced by red, pearl grey and touches of sky blue in the shields. This is more of an evening scarf than a daytime one, the kind that is enough to enliven a dark outfit — tied around the neck over a white shirt, at the waist over black trousers, or in the hair for an event. The silk twill gives the whole its sheen and drape, and the edges are hand-rolled.
