Description & history
A Christian Dior brooch in gold-plated metal · sculpted, openwork CD monogram · safety-clasp pin · Dior signature engraved on the back · 1970s · made by Henkel & Grosse, Pforzheim · 6 × 5.5 cm · grade B+.
Christian Dior never designed its jewellery in-house. From the 1950s onwards, the house entrusted its costume jewellery to specialist workshops, notably Henkel & Grosse, a manufacturer in Pforzheim — the German city of goldsmithing. This long-standing collaboration produced pieces whose manufacturing quality was anything but fanciful despite their status as costume jewellery: careful sculpting, thick plating and jeweller-quality finishes.
This brooch is a fine example. The CD monogram is rendered in ornate Gothic lettering, with scrolling serifs, looping flourishes and small spheres at the ends. The whole piece is fully openwork, allowing light and the fabric beneath to show through, giving the jewellery a lightness its size would not suggest. This is not a logo applied to an object: the logo is the object.
The metal is gold-plated, with plating that has remained perfectly even, without worn areas or tarnishing. At 6 × 5.5 cm, the brooch has a real presence: it can be seen from afar and is enough to structure an outfit. Pinned to the lapel of a blazer or coat, it gives that slightly couture 1970s look; worn on a wool scarf or attached to a bag handle, it feels more contemporary. The Dior signature is engraved on the back.
Very good overall condition, grade B+ — even gold plating, functional pin, legible signature. No major flaws to report; the item is documented in the photos. Sold with its box and RARR Vintage certificate of authenticity.
