Description & history
Imagine this brooch on the lapel of a black blazer for an evening out, or at the centre of a jacket collar for an elegant lunch — at 5.5 cm in diameter, it does not go unnoticed; it makes a statement. Not with arrogance, but with the quiet confidence that only true couture pieces can convey.
This brooch is a medal, in the literal sense — its circular openwork form, gold granulation ornaments, baroque scrolls and set pearls evoke the grand brooches of 19th-century jewellers, royal adornments and house insignia. The interlocking CD monogram is at its centre, rendered in a baroque ornamental language that blends the curves of the letters with golden metal arabesques to create a composition of rare richness and balance.
The 12 set white pearls — one at each cardinal point of the outer frame, the others punctuating the inner scrolls — add a touch of softness that tempers the opulence of the gold. Gold and white, metal and mother-of-pearl: this is the most timeless combination in couture jewellery, one Dior used in its creations from the early 1950s, notably with the pearls the house incorporated into almost all its jewellery collections produced with Henkel & Grosse in Pforzheim.
How to wear it? On a black or navy blazer, on the left lapel — the classic position, fashionable in the 1980s when this brooch was created and making a strong comeback today. On a light tweed jacket, it adds colour and volume. On a silk scarf or shawl, to hold it elegantly in place for an evening out. On a black leather bag or canvas tote, for an everyday couture touch. And for the boldest, at the centre of the neckline on a black dress — like the actresses of the 1950s who wore their Dior brooches on evening dresses.
In very good overall condition, the gold plating is intact and the pearls are in place. Dior hallmark engraved on the back. Sold with a Rarr Vintage box — an exceptional baroque Dior brooch, to wear for special occasions or to elevate everyday life.
