When a jeweller designs a scarf, it does not design like a fashion house. Cartier applies to silk the vocabulary that has always been its own: cabochons, settings, stones and gold, rendered in trompe-l'œil as on a design board. The borders of the square are thus covered with jewellery motifs — set red stones, aligned pearls, golden chains — creating the impression of a jewellery case unfolded flat.

The main subject refers to a historic source of inspiration for the house: the India of the maharajas, for whom Cartier was long a jeweller. Friezes of marching elephants, drawn in gold on a deep black background, run in bands along the square, while a caparisoned elephant occupies the centre of one corner, treated like a pendant — harnessed, adorned and set like a jewel rather than depicted as an animal.

The palette is bold: gold and yellow on black create a highly graphic contrast, warmed by a wide golden khaki border and punctuated with red and white. This is a dressy square scarf, the kind that brightens a dark outfit in a single gesture. The edges are hand-rolled, a finish rolled then sewn by hand that gives the scarf its small raised edge and characteristic drape. The 86 × 86 cm format is the most versatile: large enough to drape, supple enough to tie around the neck, in the hair, at the waist or on a bag handle.

Good condition, grade B+ — hand-rolled edges in good condition, light signs of previous use. No stains, no odour, no major flaws to report; everything is documented in the photos.
